General provisions
Substituting and corresponding to the earlier course 3FI203 Molecular Mechanisms for Enzymatic Activation of endogenous and exogenous compounds. 1.5 credits (hp) correspond to 1 credit point (p) according to earlier study regulation.
Entry requirements
For the Master of Science Programme the student should have 150 credits of which 60 credits in pharmaceutical biosciences including biochemistry. For the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Programme applies that the student should have 120 credits of which 60 credits in pharmaceutical biosciences including biochemistry. For separate course is required 150 credits of which 60 credits in biosciences including biochemistry or the equivalent knowledge from pharmaceutical, medical, veterinary science, dental, scientific or engineering programmes. Knowledge in Swedish and English equivalent to that required for basic eligibility for Swedish higher education on basic level.
Learning outcomes
The student should on completion of the course: - be able to account for different mechanisms for enzymatic activation and metabolism of endogenous and foreign compounds particularly mechanisms that concern cholesterol, vitamin D, steroid hormones and drugs - be able to account for various types of methodology that is used in the area of biochemistry/molecular biology - be able to formulate strategies to apply biochemical/molecular biological methodology on research problems - be able to interpret, evaluate and discuss critically about scientific literature in the area of metabolism/bioactivation - be able to analyse the importance of enzymatic transformations in connection with normal and pathological conditions
Content
The course deals with enzymatic activation and metabolism of endogenous and foreign compounds. Special focus is placed on cholesterol, vitamin D, steroid hormones and drugs. The course also gives an insight in research activities and methodology in the area of biochemistry/molecular biology. The course also includes diseases that are due to disturbances in enzymatic functions.
Instruction
The teaching is given as lectures and literature assignments. Emphasis is placed on students' ability to independently acquire and process materials as well as their ability to present material. There is a possibility to, within the frame of the course, specialise in literature assignments according to individual interest. Compulsory parts are the literature seminars with presentations.
Assessment
Examination takes place at the end of the course. To pass the course, passed written examination and passed results of compulsory parts are required. Possibility to supplement failed compulsory part can be given at the earliest at next course and only in case of a vacancy.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
