General provisions

The course is intended for student nurses in international exchange programmes and consists of clinical placement.

The course aims to enable the student to acquire advanced knowledge in specific and general nursing and medical knowledge in nursing. In addition the students will acquire advanced knowledge and skills regarding professional and scientific approach and carry out nursing interventions in collaboration with registered nurses and other health-care personnel.

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able to account for and specify, in relation to patients' health conditions at the clinical placement

- diagnosis and treatment of common medical diseases

- nursing at breathing difficulties and circulation disorders

- nursing related to elimination

- nursing at disturbed nutritional intake

- nursing in the context of pain and pain relief

- nursing using central and peripheral vein catheter, subcutaneous venous port and enteral tube

- principles of compensation of blood loss, fluid, electrolytes and nutrition in connection with medical care

Skills and ability

On completion of the course, students will under supervision be able to

Carry out independently and be responsible for

- identifying the needs of general and specific nursing care and carry out, evaluate and document the interventions and results in collaboration with patient and family/close relations

- prioritizing, planning and allocation of nursing work

- observing, confirming and analysing the pain and initiate interventions

- monitoring and evaluation of fluid balance and nutritional intake

- drug administration, information about effects and side-effects

- wound care

- supervision and assessment of vital functions

- to communicate with and treat patients and families/close relations

- application of statutes, principles of hygiene and safety procedures

On completion of the course, students will under supervision in collaboration with other professions be responsible for

- implementing ward round and nursing care planning

- observing and assessing effects of treatment

- identifying risks and performing prevention

- performing nursing at breathing difficulties, circulation disorders, related to nutritional status and elimination at enteral and parenteral nutrition

- informing and teaching patient and family/close relations

HEALTH SCIENCES WITH SPECIALISATION IN NURSING

- nursing at breathing difficulties and circulation disorders

- nursing related to nutritional status and elimination

- nursing at enteral and parenteral nutrition

- the responsibility of the nursing profession and other professions' interventions of teamwork in medical care

- application of nursing process phases in medical care

- pain and pain treatment

- skin and wound care

- drug administration, observation of effects and side-effects

- training of team leadership, planning and priority of the nursing work and interprofessionell collaboration

- application of statutes, hygienic principles and safety routines in medical nursing

- reflection on nursing situations based on the environmental, ethical, cultural and gender dimensions and reflection on own and others' values and interventions

MEDICAL SCIENCE

Adjusted to the content of the clinical placement

- diseases of the heart, vessels, respiratory organ, kidneys, liver, skin and urinary tract

- rheumatological, neurological, metabolic, haematological, oncological diseases and infectious diseases

- diagnosis, medical treatment, including pharmacological and transfusion therapy and treatment

- monitoring and assessment of vital signs

- The blood-, fluid-, electrolyte and nutrition therapy, acid/base balance

- monitoring and assessment of fluid-, electrolyte and nutritional status

- medical technology: intravenous injection and infusion, central and peripheral vein catheter, subcutaneous venous port and enteral tube

- participation in diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions

- observation of symptoms and treatment effects at medical conditions

Instruction

The student shall seek and apply knowledge based on science and evidence and at nursing and treatment interventions follow current laws, statutes and regulations.

WORKING METHODS

Clinical placement with organised supervision by registered nurse in medical care in collaboration with clinical university lecturer and study visits.

Assessment

During clinical placement, examinations of clinical/practical skills and specific theoretical assignments and professional attitude, treatment and co-operation ability are carried out.
