Learning outcomes

After passed examination of the course, the students should:

  • have aquired general work experience and particular experience of a workplace where knowledge and skills in archaeology are needed or valued
  • identify how (s)he have used or benefitted from knowledge acquired in previous studies when performing different duties
  • describe how work related to archeology is organised and conducted at the place where the internship was carried out
  • be able to receive work instructions and collaborate with staff at an authority, in a company or organisation

Content

The purpose of the internship is to provide experience of professional activities where archaeological expertise is in demand. It provides the opportunity to translate skills into practical work tasks and lays the foundation for a professional approach to clients and colleagues. The student participates under supervision in practical activities related to archeology within an authority, institution or company. At the workplace, the student participates in the activities to the same extent and during the same hours as other employees. Under supervision, the student performs tasks that are normally the responsibility of employees within the authority, company or organisation. The internship and supervisor must be approved in advance by the Director of Studies or Program Director and a written agreement is drawn up through a designated form between the institution, the student and the place of the internship.

Instruction

The student is introduced to various tasks by a designated supervisor. The supervisor is available to a reasonable extent to answer questions that arise during various tasks. The supervisor monitors the student's performance on a weekly basis and provides feedback.

Assessment

Examination takes place continuously during the internship period.

1. In the assessment, the supervisor shall pay special attention to the student's judgment and attitude. Mandatory attendance (working hours) is an important criterion. The ability to receive work instructions and collaborate with staff is another. The supervisor contacts the Director of Studies or the Program Director if (s)he suspects that the expected study results cannot be achieved.

2. The student submits a written account of and evaluation of the internship to the study director or program director after the end of the internship period. The report, comprising about 1200 words, should include the names of trainees and supervisors, internships, internships, assignments, a description of how the tasks relate to a larger business objective and a personal reflection on the merits and shortcomings of (a) the business and (b) the own competence.
