Entry requirements
For admission to term 4, all higher education credits from terms 1 and 2 are required.
The education follows a set course of studies, which implies that the courses should be taken in an established order.
Learning outcomes
AIMS
The course aims to give the student knowledge of human pathogenic bacteria and viruses with respect to occurrence, transmission, proliferation mechanisms, pathogenesis and treatment.
GOALS
After the course, the student should be able to:
- describe basic properties of a number of important human pathogenic viruses and bacteria.
- explain general mechanisms and consequences of viral and bacterial infection of cell, organism and population and how this knowledge is applied in infection medicine.
- explain properties that decide viruses genetic stability and consequences of many viruses fast evolution for pathogenesis, virus vaccination and treatment with antiviral medicine.
- account for infection biology, epidemiology and pathogenesis regarding bacteria as well as how bacterial infections can be prevented.
- account for how medically important antibiotics function and how bacteria develop resistance against these drugs.
- account for how interaction between agent and infection defence lead to effect on organs and clinical image.
- account for basic clinical image as well as diagnostic strategies for the most common infectious diseases in airways, gastrointestinal tract, skin and soft tissues, CNS as well as post-operative infections as well as activation of cascade system and clinical image, diagnostic criteria and basic treatment principles at sepsis/septic shock.
Content

Instruction
The course is given in the form of lectures, PBL-seminars, group tuition, laboratory sessions and demonstrations.
Assessment
The course is completed with a written examination that contains questions of type MCQ (multiple choice question) and free response questions (essay questions). Furthermore different types of practical examination as well as through active participation in seminars, laboratory sessions and similar.
For regulatory framework concerning participation in examination, number of examinations, premature interrupted placement, absence from compulsory components, see programme syllabus in the students' guide. Compulsory components include laboratory sessions, PBL-seminars and certain other seminars. Compulsory components are marked in the schedule.
If special circumstances apply, the examiner can make exceptions from the stated exam method and decide that a student is assessed in a different way. Special reason can e g be a notice of special educational support from the coordinator of the university.
Students who have not passed the examination have a right to perform 4 additional examination attempts (i.e. 5 examination attempts in total). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee can admit additional examinations. Every time the student participates at an examination is regarded as an examination attempt. Submission of a so-called blank examination counts as an examination attempt.
The student has the right to request a change of examiner after two failed examinations.
