Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be within the humanities or social sciences. Also required is 60 credits in archaeology.

Learning outcomes

After the completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• demonstrate knowledge into a specific laboratory/archive analyses and method related to Archaeology
• account for insight into source critical problems and standard practices related the specific field/method
• interpret and summaries results in relation to the chosen specific field or method
• independently carry out basic analysis and interpretation of chosen specific field/method

Content

The course provides experience in a specific method and analysis of laboratory or archive through supervision and peer-learning. The course is preparatory for Ma-thesis based on a laboratory or archive study and allows the student to build up the necessary empirical knowledge to carry out their own analyses. The student will be provided with a course supervisor and training in specific laboratory/archive analyses and method is dependent on availability of supervisor. Each student will have an individual study plan which should be agreed upon by the supervisor in consultation with the student and it should be approved by the program coordinator or the director of studies.

Instruction

Instruction is mainly in the form of supervision of the student's practical work and also as peer-to-peer learning. This will be combined with readings of key course literature on methodology, interpretation and crucial source critical problems assessed through and course report. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.

Assessment

Assessment of students' knowledge and skills is continuous during the internship. Attendance (working hours) is mandatory and an essential criterion to pass the course. A written report containing evaluation of practice and method and also an introduction to the theory and method of the chosen laboratory or archive analyses shall be submitted from the student to the program director or director of studies for approval. Examination uses the grades Pass or Fail. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
