Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- summarize fundamental properties of volcanoes and how they are formed
- understand risks and environmental impacts associated with volcanoes
- describe the societal importance of volcanoes with regard to natural and energy resources as well as culture
Content
Introduction to the planet Earth, plate tectonics and mechanisms behind volcanism. Volcanic settings on planet Earth. Inner structures of volcanoes, including magma transport system with magma chamber and related rocks. Different types of eruptions and volcanic rocks. Different volcanic landscapes and types of volcanoes. Risks and environmental impacts associated with volcanoes. Importance of volcanoes for society with regard to energy and natural resources connected to volcanism. Volcanoes in popular culture and their impact on litterature, mythology, and art.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars and exercises.
Assessment
Hand-in exercises (3 hp), participation in seminars and exercises (2 hp).
