Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be within the humanities or social sciences. Also required is 60 credits in archaeology.

Learning outcomes

After passed examination of the course, students should be able to:

• independently process and analyse archaeological sources
• independently identify and formulate relevant research questions, and critically evaluate possible ways of answering them
• to apply established archaeological methods and theories relevant for the research questions
• to write a reasoning scholarly text which is thorough and both grammatically and formally correct
• to give and take constructive critique in a scholarly discussion

Content

In this course the students will learn how to utilise their earlier studies in Archaeology in carrying out the practical work of research. This is achieved through a scholarly study of a specified length in the form of a thesis, as well as participating in a seminar series where the participants learn how to present their research in oral as well as written form. The participants in the course are expected to work actively and independently, but with the assistance of the teachers and supervisors. Active participation in seminars where other students' texts are discussed is mandatory.

Instruction

The course consists of seminars and supervision in either groups or individually. Participants in the course do not have the right to supervision after the course has officially ended. Supervision will be given in Swedish or in English.

Assessment

Assessment is made through written and oral assignments. The thesis can be written in either Swedish or in English. This is defended at a mandatory seminar where each participant should take the role as student reviewer and defendant respectively. The thesis will be graded by an examiner who is an employed teacher, somebody who has not had the role as supervisor of the thesis in question. The grading is discussed at a faculty meeting. Should there arise a disagreement between the supervisor and the examiner concerning the grading, the director of studies has the formal right to appoint a second examiner.
