Knowledge and skill corresponding to Earth Sciences – Planet Earth NV1 20 points/30 ECTS credits and Rocks and Quaternary deposits MN1, 10 points/15ECTS credits.

Aims

To provide knowledge about the methods that can be used to analyse recent and ancient sediments in the field and laboratory. The ultimate goal is to reconstruct the depositional processes, sedimentary facies and stratigraphy in relationship to depositional environment, relative changes in sea level, the tectonic setting of the basin and climate.

Content

Processes of erosion, transportation and deposition of clastic, biogenic and chemical sediments in continental, transitional and open marine environments. The use of properties of sediments and sedimentary rocks (sedimentary structures, textures and mineralogical compositions) to reconstruct the depositional environments and facies within a litho-, bio-, seismic- and sequence stratigraphic frameworks. The role of aquatic sediments in the redistribution of pollutants. Investigation of the diagenetic processes which influence the mineralogical and geochemical composition of sediments during lithification.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, practicals and field work. The participation in group sessions and field work is compulsory.

Assessment

Examination during or at the end of the course. In addition, the compulsory parts must be approved. Possible course grades are "fail","pass" or "pass with distinction". A student who fails the exam may try againat the beginning of the spring semester.
