Learning outcomes

The course is intended to give advanced proficiencies and knowledge in Turkish and a basic knowledge of modern Turkic languages and Turkic literatures.

Module 1. Turkish grammar with reading

Knowledge and understanding

After passing the course, students should be able to

• give an account of the grammar of modern literary Turkish
• summarise texts orally and in writing in Turkish.

Competence and skills

After passing the course, students should be able to

• read and translate fictional and non-fictional texts in Turkish
• explain the texts linguistically and grammatically and analyse them using linguistic methods
• use a Turkish-English/Swedish dictionary
• use idiomatic expressions in translation into Swedish.

Judgement and approach

After passing the course, students should be able to

• reflect on typological similarities and differences between Turkish and Swedish at a general level and critically
• compare the syntax of Turkish sentences and their Swedish translation in a parallel corpus at a general level and critically
• evaluate and critically interpret information in literature and other sources.

Module 2. Advanced oral and written proficiencies in Turkish

Knowledge and understanding

After passing the course, students should be able to

• actively master a vocabulary of about 2000 words.

Competence and skills

After passing the course, students should be able to

• write a grammatically and idiomatically correct short text in Turkish about a given subject
• use the most common Turkish expressions and translate them into Swedish
• talk about a given subject in Turkish
• translate selected texts from Turkish to Swedish without using a dictionary
• translate sentences from Swedish to Turkish without using a dictionary.

Judgement and approach

After passing the course, students should be able to

• identify their needs of additional knowledge for practical language use.

Module 3. Modern Turkic languages, 7.5 credits

After passing the course, students are expected to be able to

• give an account of the Turkic language family and place individual languages in it
• give an account of the historical development of the modern Turkic languages
• give an account of the fundamental features of the grammar and vocabulary of the modern Turkic languages
• describe language contact between modern Turkic languages and non-Turkic languages at a general level
• give an overview of the alphabets that are used to write modern Turkic languages
• give an overview of the demography of the modern Turkic languages with regard to number of speakers and the possibility of the languages to survive
• describe the culture and religion of present-day Turkic-speaking groups
• describe the current political situation in the countries where modern Turkic languages are spoken.

Module 4. Turkic literatures

After passing the course, students are expected to be able to

• give an account of change and development in the Turkic literatures from about 700 CE
• give an overview of the Old and Middle Turkic literatures
• give an overview of the oral literatures of the Turkic peoples
• give an overview of modern Turkish literature
• give an account of different literary genres and name important works in different genres
• give an account of the lives and literary works of important authors.

Content

The course consists of four modules.

Module 1. Turkish grammar with reading, 7.5 credits

Advanced study of Turkish grammar and reading, analysis and translation of simple Turkish texts. Application of knowledge about fiction and non-fiction literature.

Module 2. Advanced oral and written proficiencies in Turkish, 7.5 credits

Exercises in using modern Turkish in speech and writing.

Module 3. Modern Turkic languages, 7.5 credits

The module includes studies in the classification and description of modern Turkic languages. Furthermore, an introduction is given to the culture and religion of the Turkic-speaking peoples and the current political situation in the countries and regions where Turkic languages are spoken. The module also contains training in generic proficiencies such as presenting and critically discussing scientific topics.

Module 4. Turkic literatures, 7.5 credits

The module includes studies in the historical and modern literatures and an overview of typical oral and written genres of the Turkic peoples. The Turkic literature is read in translation. Studies of certain texts in the original can occur.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and assessments. The student's own learning activities are crucial for their work during the course.

Assessment

Module 1. Turkish grammar with reading

The module has two assessment components.

1. continuous oral and written assignments;
2. a written examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2.

Module 2. Advanced oral and written proficiencies in Turkish

The module has two assessment components.

1. continuous oral and written assignments;
2. an oral examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2.

Module 3. Modern Turkic languages

The module has three assessment components.

1. a written home assignment;
2. an oral presentation;
3. a take-home examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in components 2 and 3.

Module 4. Turkic literatures

The module has three assessment components.

1. a short essay;
2. an oral presentation;
3. a take-home examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in components 2 and 3.

For the grade of Pass on the whole course, Pass is required in all components. To receive the grade Pass with distinction for the complete course, participants must have received this grade for at least 22.5 credits.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree together with Turkish: intermediate course (5TU211), Modern Turkic languages (5TU125) or Turkic literatures (5TU231).
