Entry requirements
Knowledge and achievements corresponding to passed 40 credit points of natural science and technology, including basic course in Analytical Chemistry.
Aims
After the course, the student will have improved knowledge in mass spectrometry as an analytical tool, and should be able to use this knowledge to choose among available combinations of chromatographic or electrophoretic separation methods, ionisation methods and mass spectrometry detection to efficiently solve analytical problems.
Content
In this course, an overview of modern equipment for mass spectrometry will be given. Especially techniques where the ionisation is performed at atmospheric pressure, e.g. electrospray (ESI) and chemical ionisation (APCI), as well as ionisation from surfaces using laser desorption (MALDI), are considered. Emphasis is put on preferred conditions and possibilities that are offered by different combinations of separation methods and mass spectrometric detection, with reference to both qualitative and quantitative analytical aspects.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, laboratory work, seminars and demonstrations. Training in oral and written reports. Compulsory moments: Course introduction, laboratory experiments and seminars.
Assessment
Examination is arranged during and/or at the end of the course. The laboratory experiments must also be passed.
