Entry requirements

Knowledge and achievements corresponding to passed 40 credit points of natural science and technology, including basic course in Analytical chemistry.

Aims

The course is intended to provide knowledge of interaction between matter and radiation and its use for characterisation, identification and quantitative determination of elements and compounds.

Content

Atomic Absorption and Emission spectroscopy (AAS, AES). Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) and Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). Electron Spectroscopy.(ESCA, Auger). Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM, EDS). Ion Chromatography and Flow Injection Analysis.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, laboratory work, demonstrations and study visit. Training in oral and written reports. Compulsory moments: Course introduction, laboratory work and study visit.

Assessment

Examination is arranged during and/or at the end of the course. The laboratory work must also be passed. Students who have failed a test have the right to take a new examination at the beginning of the autumn semester, after Christmas vacations and at the end of the spring semester.
