Learning outcomes

Provide medical students with basic subject aimed knowledge and practical education in diagnostics and treatment of respiration -, circulation - and age related diseases that will provide the basis for the continued education to a medical degree. The teaching should give basic clinical skills in the art of taking medical history, make physical examination, evaluate clinical findings and write a medical record; it is partly intended to give basic theoretical knowledge in diagnostics and treatment of internal medical diseases and age related diseases. The course also aims to develop conduct and attitudes towards patients and other staff.

After the course, the student should: - independently be able to investigate, evaluate and treat failing vital functions. - identify patients with urgent and chronic troubles with the respiratory tract, diagnose underlying diseases and initiate treatment. - identify patients with urgent and chronic troubles with the circulation, diagnose underlying diseases and initiate treatment. - identify patients with urgent consciousness effects, diagnose underlying diseases and initiate treatment. - identify and analyse how normal ageing and common age related diseases influence patients daily life and plan medical treatment and rehabilitation. - account for the investigation and the treatment of patients with asthma and allergy diseases. - investigate and evaluate failing cognitive functions. - account for risk factors and prevention of allergy -, respiration -, circulation - and age diseases. - account for pathophysiology at allergy -, respiration -, circulation - and age related diseases. - account for basic scientific knowledge that facilitates the understanding of pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and treatment of diseases including hemostasis, circulation - and the respiratory system. Special emphasis will be placed on the background of the urgent treatment of diseases in these organ, and how ageing affects the function of these organs under normal and pathological circumstances. - independently be able to record a medical history and present a complete status and summarise this to a medical record note. - have practiced and acquired knowledge within other professions in the clinical daily work.

Content

The course starts with theoretical studies focused on clinical basic skills. Thereafter the students gives one week of practical training in clinical basic skills, so-called propedeutics. The teaching is concentrated on medical history and status. In the following ward work with placements in different sections, the training in clinical skills continues, while discipline-specific knowledge is provided. Most students have during the course clinical practice outside the Academic hospital for two to eight weeks (hospitals in Västmanland, Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Dalarna, Värmland, Uppland and Södermanland). The teaching is given within the following medical main areas: Emergency Medicine Cardiac - vascular disorders Lung diseases Geriatrics Professional skills. Coordinated teaching also takes place in clinical physiology, clinical pharmacology and diagnostic radiology. Teaching of professional development comprises teaching in medical history, status, medical record exam, secrecy regulations and teaching of violence against women.

Instruction

The teaching goes on for 16weeks, including study period, and comprise lectures, demonstrations, group tuition, case discussion - and problem-based seminars and laboratory sessions. The emphasis in the teaching is located to ward work with patient-close work, demonstrations and rounds. It comprises duty at emergency -, medicine surgery and medicine- and geriatrics wards. 24-hour duty is also included. In the course, a1 week of theoretical studies within clinical practical skills, 1 week of propedeutics and medical ethics and law.

Assessment

To participate in the final examination, the student must have gone through the following compulsory parts with approved result: Passed propedeutics. Passed practical examinations in emergency care. Passed section -, surgery - and 24-hour duty. Passed attendance at other parts according to regulations that have been announced at the beginning of the course. Examination: Written final examination with questions of essay-type. Students who have not passed the examination have a right to attend 4 additional examinations (i.e. 5 examinations in total). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may admit additional examinations. Every time the student participates in an examination counts, i.e. also submission of a so called blank exam. Students that have not passed the clinical education have the right to go through a renewed clinical education once. If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may admit an additional occasion to go through clinical education.
