General provisions

This course is only offered to students admitted to the Master's Programme in the Humanities, specialization Philosophy, specialization Theoretical Philosophy, or specialization Practical Philosophy.

Entry requirements

A student is eligible if they have fulfilled the requirements for a bachelor's degree in humanities or holds an equivalent foreign degree.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student is expected to

• be able to follow and partake in discussions about ongoing research within one or several main fields of philosophy
• be familiar with current debates within one or several main fields of philosophy
• be familiar with the typical philosophical seminar format and how philosophy is discussed in those contexts
• be able to formulate and present clarifying and critical questions orally in a seminar context.

Content

The student participates in one or several of the department's higher seminar series (except aesthetics). Participation requires reading seminar materials when called-for, as well as active participation in the seminars.

Instruction

Teaching takes the form of higher seminars. Participation in at least 12 seminar sessions is mandatory.

Assessment

The assessment consists partly of the follow-up of the student's attendance at the higher seminars, and partly of the submission of two written reports by the student.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Transitional provisions

In case of a transition from the Faculty of Arts' Master's Programme in the Humanities to master's programmes under the Department of Philosophy, this syllabus may be reused in the department's master programmes. The text under the heading Decisions and Guidelines should then be interpreted as applying to the department's master programmes.
