Entry requirements
Knowledge and skill corresponding to 20 points (30 ECTS credits) in Earth Sciences including Geoinformatics 10 points (15 ECTS credits). In addition 15 points (22.5 ECTS credits) in Mathematics and 10 points (15 ECTS credits) in Physics are required.
Aims
To give an introduction to hydrology and knowledge of the terminology and tools used. The central components of the hydrological cycle are studied in a catchment perspective.
Content
The hydrological cycle: Physical properties of air and water, hydrostatics. The catchment: Discharge and recharge areas, infiltration and percolation, soil water. Runoff formation: The hydrogram, runoff regimes, runoff models. Human impact in the catchment: Regulation, land use, irrigation, hydropower, forecasts, water management. Instruments and methods for hydrological studies: Discharge measurements, lake monitoring, snow survey, chemical analyses, tracer techniques, GIS, data collection, evaluation, and reporting.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, exercises, problem solving sessions, study visit and one-week field course.
Assessment
Examination at the end of the course. Moreover, the compulsory, exercises, seminars, and field course must be approved of. Possible course grades are "fail", "pass" or "pass with distinction". A student who fails the exam may try again within one month or at the end of the summer break.
