General provisions

This course is only offered to students admitted to the Master's Programme in the Humanities, specialization Theoretical Philosophy or Philosophy.

Entry requirements

The course Master's Thesis 1 in Theoretical Philosophy, 30 credits, or equivalent

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student is expected to either have deepened their knowledge of the problem(s) treated in their Master's Thesis 1 in Theoretical Philosophy, or to be able to -- with a high degree of independence -- delimit and formulate another research task with theoretical relevance to the field and the problems chosen. In both cases the student is expected to independently write and defend a scientific thesis which contributes to the research in the field.

Content

To write, with the guidance of a supervisor, an independent work which treats of a problem within theoretical philosophy, and which contributes to the research in the field. The work may, but needs not, be based upon the student's Master's Thesis 1 in Theoretical Philosophy.

Instruction

Instruction is offered through supervision and seminars. Participation in the seminars is mandatory.

Assessment

The assessment is based upon the writing and defence of a scientific thesis, and upon a critical oral discussion of another student's thesis.

Transitional provisions

In case of a transition from the Faculty of Arts' Master's Programme in the Humanities to master's programmes under the Department of Philosophy, this syllabus may be reused in the department's master's programmes. The text under the heading Decisions and Guidelines should then be interpreted as applying to the department's master's programmes.
