Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student is expected to:

• have a deepened understanding of the central concepts and problems in metaethics
• have the ability to clearly define the main positions and theories within metaethics
• have the ability to independently assess the strengths and weaknesses of those positions and theories
• have a deepened understanding of the analogous problems that arise regarding evaluations in other areas besides ethics, and the ability to assess how the relevant concepts, arguments, and positions in metaethics are applicable in those domains.

Content

The course is a continuation of the A level course Metaethics and Metanormativity. Its aim is to give students a deepened understanding of the metaethical topics that are addressed in the more elementary course (concerning, for example, the objectivity of ethics, the nature of moral convictions, the possibility of moral knowledge, etc.) as well as a deepened understanding of the connections with the analogous problems that arise regarding evaluations in other domains than ethics (including aesthetics and the philosophy of science).

Instruction

Instruction is given through lectures.

Assessment

The assessment is based upon a written take-home assignment.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
