General provisions
The Centre for Gender Research is responsible for this course. This course is offered as part of the Master's level.
Entry requirements
Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen) with a minimum of 60 credits in Gender Studies (or equivalent) and at least 15 credits in Gender Studies at the Master's level.
Learning outcomes
Following successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- Independently and critically formulate a research question relevant to the field of gender studies.
- Independently, with relevant methods and within given time frames, define, design and carry out a qualified research assignment which makes some contribution to knowledge within the area of study.
- Systematically search and critically evaluate academic texts in the area of study.
- Insightfully defend their thesis in a seminar setting (thesis defence).
- Independently conduct and present an analytically and methodologically advanced reading (be an opponent to) another student's thesis and place that work in a wider theoretical context.
Content
During the course the student prepares an independent degree project at the advanced level and defends this project in a seminar setting. The student also once acts as a critical reader (opponent) of another degree project.
Instruction
Teaching is provided in the form of individual supervision. Supervision is provided during the expected term times. Students also have the opportunity to participate in seminars on methods and the writing process.
Assessment
The course is assessed via the thesis, the public defence of the thesis (oral presentation and discussion) in a seminar setting and by standing as an opponent (critical reader) to another student's thesis. All written submissions will be subject to a plagiarism check.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
