Learning outcomes

For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to

• describe the main features of the history and genres of Swahili literature
• name and describe some central works and authors
• identify and briefly describe different formal elements and stylistic features in different literary genres and styles.
• discuss the role of women writers in Swahili literature
• analyse and discuss Swahili literary works from the perspective of literary studies.
• in general and critically discuss the role of Swahili literature for the language and East African society.

Content

The course provides an introduction to and the basics of literary theory, the historical development of Swahili literature, authors, works, genres and their formal features, the role of women in the literary tradition and the role of Swahili language and literature under colonialism and in the emerging independent states.

Instruction

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars and examinations. The student's own learning activities are of crucial importance for the work on the course.

Assessment

The examination of the course consists of short written assignments, active participation in compulsory seminars and a take-home exam.

For the grade G (pass), G is required on all examinations. For the grade VG (pass with distinction), VG is also required on the take-home exam.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

This course may not be included in a degree together with Swahili B (5SW001).
