Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • discuss and critically refllect about the main tenets in the theoretical discussion concerning identity processes, nationalism, social mobilisation and ethnic conflict
  • understand and compare the epistemological assumptions and implications of different approaches
  • problematise and reflect about how theories in the field are related to fundamental assumptions in the fields of social science and history
  • discuss and demonstrate an ability to independently analyse the relationship between identity, ethnicity, nationalism, social mobilisation and the effect these factors have on the emergence of ethnic conflict historically and in contemporary context

Content

This course provides an advanced introduction to theories of nationalism and ethnic conflict. Based on a discussion of the concepts of ethnicity and nation, students will study the phenomena of nationalism, ethnic mobilisation and ethnic conflicts from the perspectives of the history of ideas, sociology, political science and social psychology. Both classical and modern literature will be paid attention.

Instruction

The teaching includes lectures, seminars and group discussions.

Assessment

Examination takes place through oral presentations and written assignments.
