Learning outcomes

The course is intended to give basic knowledge of the Turkic literatures, their characteristic features and their typical oral and written genres.

For the grade of Pass, on completion of the course students should be able to

• give an account of change and development in the Turkic literatures from about 700 CE.
• give an overview of the literatures of the Old and Middle Turkic periods
• give an overview of the oral literatures of the Turkic peoples
• give an overview of modern Turkish literature
• give an account of different literary genres and name important works in different genres
• give an account of the life and literary works of important authors.

Content

The course includes studies in historical and modern literature and an overview of typical oral and written genres of the Turkic peoples. The Turkic literature is read in translation. Studies of certain texts in the original may occur.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The students' own learning activities are crucial for their work during the course.

Assessment

The module has three assessment components:

1. a short essay
2. an oral presentation
3. a final written home assignment.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 3. The grading scale for component 1 and 2 is Fail-Pass. The grading scale for component 3 is Fail-Pass-Pass with distinction.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.
