Entry requirements

180 credits, or equivalent, including 60 credits in philosophy, aesthetics, musicology, literature or art history. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a good grasp of the main questions, problems, theories or concepts discussed
  • critically discuss those questions, problems, theories or concepts
  • develop independent and autonomous arguments and positions concerning the theme of the course
  • apply the theories and concepts to other questions or subjects.

Content

This course examines a particular question or topic in recent philosophical aesthetics. The course addresses its theme either by concentrating on one book, or by pursuing a line of thought through a focussed list of papers. The exact focus of the course will vary depending on the expertise and interests of the instructor, but possible topics might include the nature of aesthetic value, aesthetic rationality, games, and ethical criticism of art.

Instruction

Instruction is provided through seminars. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The course is assessed by a home examination.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
