Aims

The aim of the course is to give an introduction

to the state of the art in the field of language

engineering, and to provide basic skills in

grammar and lexicography. It is also important

that the students get an understanding of the

limitations inherent in typical current language

engineering software, and of how computational

linguistics research and development can improve

such software.

Content

Language engineering - an overview of the field.

Basics of grammar and lexicography.

Computational linguistics - the theoretical basis

for language engineering. Language as a

knowledge-based communicative process. Modelling

the linguistic processes. Linguistic

functionality in word and text processing systems.

Machine translation and computer-aided

translation. Data base interfaces in natural

language. Document processing. Computer-assisted

language learning and instruction. Electronic

dictionaries and language data bases. Speech

technology.

Instruction

Lectures and exercise sessions, some of which are obligatory.

Assessment

Exercises, assignments and written or oral tests.
