Entry requirements

180 credits, or equivalent, including 60 credits in philosophy, aesthetics, musicology, literature or art history. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the course students are expected to:

  • understand the significance of the theme of the course for other discussions in aesthetics
  • be able to demonstrate a good grasp of the main theories and concepts discussed
  • be able to critically discuss those theories and concepts
  • be able to apply the theories and concepts to other questions or subjects
  • be able to articulate an understanding of considerations of theory choice in philosophy
  • be able to develop independent and original arguments and positions concerning the theme of the course.

Content

Many things besides art are objects of aesthetic interest. And aesthetic questions arise in contexts far beyond art galleries. This course concentrates on one question of aesthetics beyond art. The content of the course varies according to the research specialties of the teacher, but examples might include the aesthetics of ruins and monuments, environmental aesthetics, the aesthetics of the everyday, and feminist aesthetics.

Instruction

Instruction is provided through lectures and seminars. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The course is assessed by a home assignment.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
