Learning outcomes

A student who completes this course will be able to

  • Describe central aspects of Swedish 19th- and 20th-century history
  • Characterize the Swedish Welfare state
  • Describe central concepts such as the welfare state, civil society, and the People's home
  • Explain how different categories of people were affected by industrialization, urbanization, democratization, and increased gender equality.
  • Independently conduct a line of argument about an aspect of Swedish 19th- and 20th-century history and find and refer to relevant research.

Content

The course focuses on modern Swedish history from a political, economic, and social perspective. This includes the Swedish popular movements and the breakthrough of democracy, the welfare state, Sweden during the Second World War, the Cold War, and its aftermath. Students get to work with central concepts such as the welfare state, civil society, and "folkhemmet". Particular emphasis is given to issues of continuity and change, equality, and the notion of the singularity ofif the Swedish case in an international context.

Instruction

Instruction takes the form of lectures and seminars. The language of instruction is English. Attendence is mandatory, and non-attendance is compensated for by extra assignments.

Assessment

Students are assessed through written and oral assignments. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
