Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

- describe the underlying pathophysiology and complications for the disease areas included in the course                                                                              - explain mechanisms of action, and interaction mechanisms for the drugs included in the course, as well as evaluate and resolve interactions

- select and justify dosing and monitoring strategy for special patient groups and individual patients by performing pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) calculations and argue based on PK and PD properties

- describe and discuss current evidence and recommendations for treatment of the disease areas included in the course

- describe and discuss drug-related problems associated with the disease areas included in the course

- select drug and dosage strategy for an individual patient and justify this based on current evidence, recommendations, drug properties and patient factors

- set treatment goals and plan for initiation and withdrawal, monitoring and follow-up of drug treatment in an individual patient and justify this based on current evidence, recommendations, drug properties and patient factors

- optimise drug treatment in a multi-morbid patient with complex drug treatment by identifying and evaluating drug-related problems and selecting and justifying interventions

Content

The course includes disease areas according to the current course description and treatment strategies and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects as a basis for monitoring and optimisation of the drug treatment for the individual patient. The student works with and discusses real and complex patient cases with a focus on treatment options, drug-related problems and interventions for these.

Instruction

The teaching is given in the form of lectures, workshops, written and oral presentations, discussion seminars and self-studies. Certain parts of the teaching may be online and given in English.

Compulsory parts: Workshops and discussion seminars on pharmacotherapy, PK and PD, as well as written and oral presentations of assignments.

Assessment

For a passing grade the student must pass the written exam 1 (1 hp), pass the written exam 2 (5 hp), pass a written PK patient case (1 hp) and have approved results on other compulsory exercises 1 (4,5 hp), 2 (1,5 hp) and 3 (2 hp).

The possibility of supplementing unapproved compulsory parts can be prepared at the earliest at the next course session and only subject to availability. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
