Entry requirements

Passed courses in Biochemistry 7 credits, Anatomy 8 credits, and Cell and molecular biology 15 credits, or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide basic theoretical knowledge within the subject of laboratory animal science. The training does not give authorization to start working with animals in research.

Knowledge and understanding

After the course, the student should be able to:

  • state and describe laws and regulations as well as principles for 3R and ethical argumentation in connection with the use of animals in scientific experiments.

     

  • describe basic principles of rodent behaviour, care, biology and welfare and humane killing.

Skills and Abilities

After the course, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate the ability to responsibly participate in group exercises, critically analyze ethical issues in connection with animal experiments and in a structured manner orally present and discuss scientific work within the subject of laboratory animal science.

Evaluation ability and approach

After the course, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate an ethical and reflective approach to research that uses animals.

Content

Laws, regulations and authorities relevant to the use of animals in research, 3R, application for animal ethical approval, housing, enrichment, animal welfare and diseases, rodent biology and physiology, description of animal and behavioral models, ethology, personal safety in connection with work with animals in research and methods of killing.

Instruction

The teaching includes a web-based theoretical course, lectures, seminars, and group work with oral presentations.

Assessment

For an approved course, you must:

i) approved results on all web tests

ii) that the student has actively and satisfactorily participated in and reported all mandatory elements

iii) passed individual examination

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions to the specified examination method and allow a student to be examined in a different way. Special reasons can e.g. be notified of special pedagogical support from the university's coordinator.
