A Bachelor's degree with a linguistic subject as the main field of study
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student should be able to
- Account for and discuss examples of current linguistic research on speaking and writing in working life
- Discuss different methods for collecting and analyzing material that are useful in studies of workplace communication
- Discuss the conditions for communication in working life and what linguistic knowledge can contribute
- Propose and motivate a research and development project that concerns some aspect of communication in the workplace
Content
The course focuses on language and communication in working life. Students learn about research on speaking and writing in professional contexts. Based on this research the students discuss how the conditions of working life can be understood, what communicative skills are required in modern working life and what a linguist can contribute. Within the course, students also explore a chosen theme in depth by outlining a research and development project.
Instruction
Teaching is held in the form of lectures and seminars. Compulsory elements are included.
Assessment
The course is continuously assessed through seminars and completion of oral and written assignments. If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions to the specified examination method and allow a student to be examined differently. Special reasons can, e.g., be notified of exceptional educational support from the university's coordinator.
