General provisions

Finalised by The board of the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University, November 6 2023,  with reference to Chapter 6, sections 14 and 15 högskoleförordningen (1993:100). The syllabus is in force from January 1 2024.

The course comprehends 10 credits and is an advanced course at Master's level. The course is given in English.

Learning outcomes

The course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the legal issues that arise in banking, securities markets as well as insurance.

Outcome: skills and competence

The objective of the course is that students develop the skills to

- analyse different sources of financial law

- to express themselves using the legal terms properly

- appraise complex circumstances and their legal consequences

- analyse the main regulatory strategies applied to financial markets law

- balance the different interests concerning financial markets law

- understand and explain the criticisms and issues of financial markets law

- discuss the interaction between European and international developments and economic public law and take the international and societal context of economic public law into consideration when analysing this legal area

Content

The course encompasses the following subject areas:

- Banking regulation

- Securities markets law

- Insurance regulation

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures, study visits and interactive seminars.

In addition, all students must complete written and oral assignments during the course.

For special reasons, the examiner may exempt from the assignments and decide on other complementary tasks.

Assessment

The course comprehends 10 credits. The assessment is based on an oral or written exam by the end of the course.

The student must pass the exam in order to pass the course.

The learning outcomes above are complemented with grading criteria, which can be found in the teaching plan.

In the teaching plan, allowed material at the exam is specified. Also, reexamination procedures are described in the teaching plan.

For special reasons, the examiner may exempt from the indicated examination method and allow an alternative examination form. 

The grading system of the course is Fail (U), Pass (B), Pass with credit (Ba), Pass with distinction (AB). For the grade B, all learning outcomes must be accomplished with a passed result. For a higher grade (Ba or AB), the results for all learning outcomes are weighed together according to the examiner's assessment.

Rules for assessment and reexamination of grades are found in Chapter 6, sections 23 and 24 högskole­förordningen.

Disciplinary action in the case of cheating

It is not allowed to mislead the examiner at the exam or at any other assessed assignment. Cheating will be reported to the Disciplinary Board of the University, which can decide on warnings or suspensions up to 6 months.
