Learning outcomes
Module 1: Balochi poetry (7.5 credits)
For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to
- read easy Balochi poetry
- translate easy Balochi poetry into Swedish or English
- account for important themes in Balochi poetry.
Module 2: Modern Balochi fictional prose (7.5 credits)
For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to
- read modern Balochi short stories in different dialects
- translate modern Balochi short stories into Swedish or English.
- be familiar with important themes in Balochi fiction.
Module 3: Balochi dialectology (7.5 credits)
For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to
- give a detailed account of the Balochi dialect situation
- describe an optional Balochi dialect or dialect group in terms of phonology, morphology and syntax and compare it with the standard literary language
- read texts in the chosen special dialect
- translate texts in the chosen special dialect into Swedish or English.
Module 4: Introduction to the Iranian languages (7.5 credits)
For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to
- describe the main languages of the Iranian language family
- account for the most important phonological diachronic developments in the Iranian language family
- explain the development of nominal morphology in Persian and describe the nominal morphology of another Iranian language.
- account for the development of verb morphology in Persian and describe the verb morphology of another Iranian language.
- account for the ergative construction in Iranian languages
- describe language standardization processes in Iranian languages
- explain the main differences between oral and written literature in Iranian languages.
Content
Module 1: Balochi poetry (7.5 credits)
This module provides an overview of Balochi classical and modern poetry. Important poets and themes are discussed and a number of poems are read in Balochi and translated into Swedish or English.
Module 2: Modern Balochi fictional prose (7.5 credits)
In this module, modern Balochi short stories are read and translated into Swedish or English. Themes in modern fiction are discussed based on short stories read in Balochi B and Balochi C.
Module 3: Balochi dialectology (7.5 credits)
This module studies the Balochi dialect situation. Each student also specializes in a dialect of his or her choice, which is compared to standard Balochi in terms of phonology, morphology and syntax. Texts in the chosen special dialect are read and translated into Swedish or English.
Module 4: Introduction to the Iranian languages (7.5 credits)
This module gives an overview of the most important Old Iranian, Middle Iranian and New Iranian languages and the written evidence/literature available in the different languages. For New Iranian languages, the sociolinguistic situation and the threats to the survival of the languages is also presented and discussed.
Instruction
The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and examinations. The student's own learning activities are crucial for the completion of the course.
Assessment
Module 1: Balochi poetry (7.5 credits)
The module has two examination components
- oral presentation (grading scale U/G/VG)
- written final exam (grading scale U/G/VG)
For grade G on the module, G is required on both components. For a grade of VG on the module, VG is required on both components.
Module 2: Modern Balochi fictional prose (7.5 credits)
The module has two examination components
- oral presentation (grading scale U/G/VG)
- written final exam (grading scale U/G/VG)
For grade G on the module, G is required on both components. For a grade of VG on the module, VG is required on both components.
Module 3: Balochi dialectology (7.5 credits)
The module has two examination components
- oral presentation (grading scale U/G/VG)
- written assignment (grading scale U/G/VG).
For grade G on the module, G is required on both components. For a grade of VG on the module, VG is required on both components.
Module 4: Introduction to Iranian languages (7.5 credits)
The module has three examination components
- oral presentation (grading scale U/G/VG)
- written assignment (grading scale U/G/VG)
- exam (grading scale U/G/VG).
For grade G on the module, G is required on all components. For a grade of VG on the module, VG is required on all components.
For a grade G on the entire course, at least a grade G is required on all modules. For a grade of VG on the entire course, a grade of VG on at least 22.5 credits is required.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
