Aims

To give basic understanding of the structure and property relationship of polymers. How polymers are manufactured and used.

Content

General properties of polymers, classification and systematisation of synthetic polymers and biopolymers. Polymer chemistry; polymerisation, structure and degradation. Polymers in solution; thermodynamics, diffusion and viscosity, gels. Polymers in the solid state; crystalline and amorphous polymers, thermodynamics, transformations, mechanical and elastic properties. Methods for characterisation and analysis of polymers in solution and in the solid state.

Laboratory work: Polymer characterisation.

Instruction

Lectures, tutorials and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written exam at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course is also required and is assigend 2 points.
