Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students should be able to
- describe sustainability-related concepts such as regeneration, resilience, degrowth and circularity, and explain how these can be applied to a given business in the tourism industry,
- analyse goods, services and processes within the tourism industry with regard to ecological, social and economic sustainability,
- discuss the impact of visit-related activities on the local community,
- problematise business practices for hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, guiding and attractions in relation to sustainability.
Content
Analysis and development of ecological, social and economic sustainability within the tourism industry. New concepts in tourism, such as regeneration, resilience, degrowth, circularity. Upcoming trends, such as slow tourism, community-based tourism and redistribution from peak- to off-season. Practices in innovation and co-creation of experiences. Good business practices for hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, guiding and attractions in the post-pandemic era.
Instruction
Lectures and seminars.
Assessment
Written and oral presentation of assignments.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
