Algebra and Geometry IP1, 4 credit points, or the equivalent.
Aims
Having gone through this course, the students should acquire a basic knowledge of strength of materials and statics with applictions to simple building elements and structures like trusses, columns, beams and frames. They should be able to analyse statically determinate as well as statically indeterminate beams and frames. They should also be able to analyse a plane state of stress with regard to principal stresses and strains.
Content
Statics: The concept of force, addition of forces, equilibrium, planer equilibrium problems internal forces and moments in simple and continuous beams and frames.
Strenth of materials: Uniaxial and biaxial state of stress and strain, generalised Hooke's law. Determination of principal stresses and principal strains. State of stress in bars subjected to bending shear and torsion.
Structural mechanics: Bending of beams, analyses of statically indeterminate beams and frames using the force method. Stability problem.
Determination and reduction of applied forces and force combinations.
Instruction
General lectures, tutorials and exercise sessions.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course and approved exercises.
