Entry requirements

120 credits in science/engineering. Participation in Quantum Physics or Quantum Physics F. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. 

Content

The focus is on providing tools to record and analyse spektroskopiska data from practical applications. To provide a basis for interpretation of data we consider the processes that are the basis for the techniques: principles of time-dependent and time-independent quantum mechanics formulations of measurement processes are combined with modern spectroscopic techniques and instrumentation. 

Description of quantum systems for spectroscopy: results from quantum mechanical measurements in time-dependent and time-independent quantum mechanics. Physical processes and their spectral lineshapes.

Data analysis with non-linear optimization techniques; machine learning; presentation and visualization of spectroscopic data and derived quantities.   

Spectroscopic techniques versus scattering techniques; electromagnetic interactions with matter in various states; charged particle interaction with matter; mass spectrometry; spectroscopic measurements as assesment of physical processes in scientific and technological applications: charged particle accelerators, nuclear reactors, fusion plasmas, astronomy, materials science.  

Time-dependent laser spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy, or X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy laboratory excercise

Instruction

Lectures, group excercises, tutorials and laboratory exercises 

Assessment

Oral and written examination.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
