Solid State Chemistry 5 points and Materials Chemistry 5 points.
Aims
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- Decribe the correlation between crystal structure, bonding, properties as well as application areas for important ceramic materials.
- Describe amorphous ceramic systems and their applications and explain undercooling and nucleation effects in glasses.
- Identify defect reaction using Kröger-Vinks method and calculate defect concentrations.
- Apply knowledge on thermodynamics and phase diagrams from previous courses on binary ceramic systems.
- Draw and interpret ternary phase diagrams, apply ternary lever rules and predict solidification paths.
- Perform modelling calculations on ternary systems
- Explain mechanical and thermal properties in ceramic systems.
- Decribe and identify methods for synthes, forming, sintering and machining of ceramic materials with a special emphasis on powder technology.
Communication training is integrated in the materials science coursen on the programme. In this course the student will especially train to:
- search articles in scientific articles and extraxt and compile scientific information.
- Analyse a problem on ceramic materials and suggest and motivate solutions to the problem.
- Present the problem orally an in writing
- Be opponent on another presentation
Content
Crystal structures of important ceramic materials, non-crystalline ceramics, defects in ceramics. Phase transformations in ceramic systems. Ternary phase diagrams, Moddeling of ternary phase diagrams. Synthesis of ceramic materials. Sintering. Mechanical and thermic properties of ceramic materials.
Instruction
Lectures, laboratory work and literature assignments.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course is also required and is assigned 2 points.
