Entry requirements

Fulfilment of the requirements for a Bachelor's degree, from an internationally recognised university. Also required is 30 credits in peace and conflict studies, or the equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Passed the 30 mandatory credits in the first semester of the MSSc programme.

Learning outcomes

In order to pass the course, the student will independently and within the specified time frame write a thesis anchored in relevant scholarly literature. Through the course, the student is expected to achieve the following goals:

1. Through independent work, contribute new knowledge in the field of peace and conflict research, broadly defined
2. Independently specify theoretical expectations and clarify relevant central concepts
3. Develop a research design that enables a systematic empirical examination of the thesis' questions or hypotheses, as well as presenting the results in a clear and concise manner
4. Be able to analyze and assess source material, interpret the results and draw adequate conclusions
5. Be able to reflect on the design and execution of different types of research tasks and discuss them in a constructive way with others
6. Adherence to the Department's Policy on Ethical Guidelines for Student Work
7. An ability to communicate in English, in writing and/or orally

Content

The course starts with lectures on both the research process and its sub-components, and on the craft of research and its various components. Thereafter, all teaching will be in the form of supervision, where all students are given a clearly specified amount of supervision time.

Instruction

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars and supervision. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The examination consists of in-class participation and written examination.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Uppsala University does not accept cheating and plagiarism. Suspected incidents of cheating or plagiarism are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, which may issue a formal warning to the student or suspend the student from studies for a certain period.
