Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

• discuss or otherwise show familiarity with important contemporary debates in normativity
• understand and use important argumentative structures in a variety of philosophical contexts
• engage with new texts on topics that may include reasons, oughts, rationality, and normativity.

Content

This course provides focused overview of the important topic of normativity in analytic philosophy. We shall focus on key debates about the metaphysics of various normativity properties, argumentative strategies when working on normativity, and various specific debates in the contemporary normative literature.

Instruction

Instruction will be given in the form of lectures, although substantial discussion and participation will be expected (including group discussions). Learning will be achieved through combining lectures, readings, and handouts.

Assessment

Assessment is based upon a final written examination.

​If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
