Admitted to the Master's Programme in Clinical Pharmacy.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

- apply methods and tools to practice clinical pharmacy and work professionally, independently and consultatively in a healthcare team

- reflect on one's clinical practice and the need for continuous development and learning

- work systematically to identify, solve and prevent drug-related problems in individual patients in a healthcare setting

- communicate with patients and healthcare staff in an empathetic and efficient manner and adapt the content of the communication to given conditions

- identify patient-specific drug-related problems based on relevant sources, propose treatment goals, interventions, plan for prioritisation and follow-up and justify this based on current evidence, recommendations, drug properties and patient factors

- discuss patients' treatment based on an assessment of risk/benefit for the individual and sustainability aspects

- describe a specialized healthcare field of activity and identify a development area from a pharmaceutical perspective, as well as design and present a clinical pharmaceutical service that addresses this.

- report tasks in a structured manner, orally and in writing, in good Swedish

Content

Supervised periods of clinical attachement (VFU) are carried out on an in patient ward and/or outpatient care. Two VFU periods are included in the course. During basic VFU, the student participates in the day-to-day work and practices clinical skills specified in a checklist. The student receives feedback from supervisors on their development in the areas of communication and information, medication review and professional approach. A number of patient cases are summarized and presented in writing. The second VFU period is a specialisation and the experiences from it are presented orally. The course also includes clinical pharmacy service development.

Instruction

Teaching is carried out in the form of lectures, oral and written presentations, workshops, discussion seminars, peer exercises, VFU and self-studies. Some parts of the teaching may be online and given in English. VFU can be located in different parts of the country.

Compulsory parts: ​

Lectures prior to VFU, VFU, written and oral presentations, peer and reflection tasks, workshops and discussion seminars around clinical situations.

Assessment

For a passing grade the student need: approved basic clinical training (VFU) part 1 (4 credits) and part 2 (2 credits), approved specialized clinical training (VFU) (2 credits), approved patient case (3 credits), approved presentation of specialization with service development (2 credits), approved clinical examination (OSCE) (2 credits), approved clinical training (VFU) assignments (2 credits) and approved results on other mandatory components (1 credit).

The possibility of supplementing unapproved compulsory parts can be prepared at the earliest at the next course session and only subject to availability. A student with a failed VFU may redo this part only once. Applications for renewed course participation are made to the Department of Pharmacy.

If there are any special reasons for doing so, the examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

In order to start VFU, the student must have passed the compulsory elements completed up to that point within the courses 3FB505 and 3FB506 and, where required, have an issued health certificate or the equivalent according to current routine. Where required, the student must present a criminal record extract before starting VFU. During VFU, basic hygiene routines must be applied, e.g. regarding short sleeves, jewelry and artificial nails. For an approved course, the student must be present during all VFU days of the course and fulfill other requirements.

Exceptions from the University's parental policy and other working hours than Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 may occur during VFU. A student may fail the course prematurely, which also leads to the student leaving the VFU place. Reasons for early failure are gross incompetence, continued participation in the course entails a significant risk that the student may injure another person or valuable property.
