Content

This course concerns the applied practice, and further development, of tasks and knowledge acquired through the specialization Digital Media and Society of the Master Programme in Social Sciences, and reflection of those tasks and knowledge, during and after the internship, in an organisation selected from a broad range of organisations and professional environments.

It is the responsibility of the student to find and arrange for an internship in an organisation (in Sweden or abroad). All internships are subject to approval by the internship course coordinator. Students are required to get approval of their internship before they start. Any major changes to the internship plan, before or during the internship, need to be communicated with no delay to, and be approved by, the internship course coordinator.

It is expected that the student participates in the organisation's everyday work life and is given the opportunity to engage in varied assignments and tasks involving planning, implementing and evaluating media and communication related activities, pertinent to the student's second cycle university education. The student will be given the opportunity to work with at least one extensive and complex task or project of long duration.

Two types of internships are distinguished in this course:

  • a vocational internship, where the student undertakes more vocationally-oriented tasks, oran applied research internship, where the student performs applied research within or for the organisation.

Instruction

Each student is assigned a supervisor in the organisation where he/she conducts the internship. Teaching is offered in the form of guidance and supervision of the student's work by the internship supervisor, in the selected organisation, and through communication and/or meetings and seminar(s) organised by with the internship course coordinator.

The internship period corresponds to ten weeks of full-time studies (equivalent to minimally 375 hours of work) and is completed normally within a semester. Exceptions have to be approved by the internship course coordinator.

Assessment

The student is evaluated on the basis of: 1. a report and a portfolio of the student's work, submitted by the student to the internship course coordinator, after the completion of the internship. The report is expected to contain a critical and theoretically informed reflection about the observed and performed tasks and professional practices, including their ethical dimensions. 2. a report on the student's performance submitted by the internship supervisor to the course coordinator, after the internship's completion. To pass the course, it is required that the student has met the requirements set by the course and has carried out the internship assigned tasks, in a satisfactory manner.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator or a decision by the department's working group for study matters.

Other regulations

This elective course is offered in the specialization Digital Media and Society of the Master's Programme in Social Sciences. Only one internship course can be selected and accounted for, in the students' Master's Degree.
