Learning outcomes

The course intends to give a deeper knowledge of the morphology and syntax of the Balochi language. Furthermore is intended to provide additional skills in reading, speaking and writing Balochi. An overview of Balochi literature is also included.

Subcourse 1: Grammar and text reading (7,5 credits)

For the grade Pass, after completing the subcourse, the student should be able to

• read simple fictional prose texts with understandable pronunciation
• translate simple Balochi fictional prose texts into Swedish
• explain the phonology and basic morphology of Modern Standard Balochi.

Subcourse 2: Text reading and syntax (7,5 credits)

For the grade Pass, after completing the subcourse, the student should be able to

• read moderately difficult prose fiction texts with understandable pronunciation
• translate moderately difficult Balochi fictional prose texts into Swedish
• explain basic syntax in Modern Standard Balochi.

Subcourse 3: Oral and written proficiency (7,5 credits)

For the grade Pass, after completing the subcourse, the student should be able to

• translate moderately difficult sentences from Swedish into Balochi and vice versa
• write and read out moderately difficult Balochi text in Latin script
• write simple text in Latin script
• read simple text in Arabic script
• have an active command of an extended vocabulary that includes traditional Baloch culture and economy (agriculture and livestock) as well as socio-political changes associated with the modernization of society
• communicate idiomatically and correctly on the above topics.

Subcourse 4: Balochi literature (7,5 credits)

For the grade Pass, after completing the subcourse, the student should be able to

• account for the genres of oral literature
• acount for the role of oral literature in society
• account for the lives and poetry of classical poets
• describe the emergence of modern written literature
• account för the lives and literary works of modern authors.

Content

Subcourse 1: Grammar and text reading (7,5 credits)

Reading of Balochi short stories, grammatical analysis and translation of the texts, review of periphrastic verb constructions and additional nominal morphology.

Subcourse 2: Text reading and syntax (7,5 credits)

Reading of Balochi short stories, grammatical analysis and translation of the texts, review of syntax with a focus on subordination.

Subcourse 3: Oral and written proficiency (7,5 credits)

Conversation exercises, writing exercises, reading exercises, translation exercises.

Subcourse 4: Balochi literature (7,5 credits)

An overview of the oral and written literature. Introduction of authors. Classical and modern literature is read in English or Swedish translation.

Instruction

Instruction consists of lectures, workshops and assessment. The student' s independent learning activities are of crucial importance to the work on the course.

Assessment

Subcourse 1: Grammar and reading of literature (7,5 credits)

The subcourse has two examinatory parts:

1. examinatory reading in class (grading scale U/G/VG)
2. written final exam (grading scale U/G/VG)

The tasks, content and format of the examinatory reading, the date of completion/submission and information on re-examination are given at the start of the course.

For a grade of G on the subcourse, G is required on both parts, for VG, VG is required on both parts.

Subcourse 2: Reading of literature and a deepened understanding of syntax  (7,5 credits)

Examination is conducted through a written final exam (grading scale U/G/VG).

Subcourse 3: Oral and written skills  (7,5 credits)

The module has two examinatory parts:

1. oral final exam (grading scale U/G/VG)
2. written assignment (grading scale U/G/VG)

For a grade of G on the subcourse, G is required on both parts, for VG, VG is required on both parts.

Subcourse 4: Balochi literature  (7,5 credits)

The module has two examinatory parts:

1. oral presentations (grading scale U/G/VG)
2. written final exam (grading scale U/G/VG)

The tasks, content and format of the oral presentations, the date of completion/submission and information on re-examination are given at the start of the course.

For a grade of G on the subcourse, G is required on both parts, for VG, VG is required on both parts.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent parts have been read within another course included in the degree.
