Fulfilment of the requirements for a Bachelor's degree with a language subject as the main field of study.

Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide advanced skills in Ottoman and the ability to analyze classical texts including Ottoman poetry.

On completion of the course, to merit the grade Pass, students should at least be able to:

- read selected Ottoman texts printed in Arabic script;

- read selected Ottoman manuscripts in Arabic script;

- describe the Ottoman writing system;

- describe grammatical and lexical differences between Ottoman and Modern Turkish;

- read selected Ottoman prose texts and transcribe;

- read selected Ottoman poems and transcribe;

- translate selected Ottoman texts (prose and poetry) into Swedish;

- describe different types of classical Turkish poetry.

Content

The course provides an introduction to the Ottoman writing system as well as advanced skills in reading, transcribing, translating and analyzing selected printed or manuscript texts.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The student's own learning activities are of crucial importance for the work on the course.

Assessment

The course has two examinatory parts

1. continuous oral and written assignments;

2. home exam.

The content and format of the continuous oral and written assignments, the date of completion/submission and information about re-examination are given at the start of the course.

For a grade of G, G is required for both parts. For the grade VG, VG is also required for part 2.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
