Aims
The course aims to give the students a very good knowledge of the relationship between the structure and actions and the general chemical properties and quantitative structure-effect relationships of pharmaceutical substances, modern drug design and drug nomenclature. Having completed the course, the student shall be able to work independently with problems and questions relating to medicinal chemistry and contribute to safe and rational development and use of drugs in the community.
Content
The course deals with pharmaceuticals from an organic chemistry perspective. Most emphasis is placed on structure-effect relationships, e.g. influence of stereochemical factors on drug-receptor interaction. The influence of physical and chemical properties on the substance's bioavailability is also discussed. The course also includes drug nomenclature and chemical aspects of stability problems and drug metabolism.
Instruction
The course comprises lectures and seminars. Compulsory parts of the course:
Participants are required to attend the course introduction, examination and special parts of the course as specified by the Course Director in connection with the course introduction.
Assessment
Written examinations are held at the end of the course.
