Aims

After completing the course the student should be able to:

- account for the most important chemical properties of the elements and understand the systematics of the periodic system in this respect.

- describe the characteristics of the solid state at atomic level especially basic crystal structures, different kinds of solid solution and defects in crystals.

- describe several acid-base concepts and use these to interpret and predict reactions.

- describe redox reactions and predict redox reactions.

- use data from tables to perform equilibrium calculations. Interpret and construct Ellingham, Latimer, Frost and Pourbaix diagrams.

- explain stability, geometry and magnetic properties and describe different types of isomerism for complexes

- describe different types of ligand substitution reactions in complexes.

- understand the significance of catalytic processes and describe catalytic steps.

- account for the role of some metals (metal cations) in biological processes.

Content

Descriptive inorganic chemistry. Fundamentals of the solid state. Coordination chemistry. Chemical bonding, structure, thermodynamics, kinetics, reaction mechanisms, catalysis, synthesis are treated within the three blocks above.

Laboratory work: Contents as above.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons, laboratory work and seminars. During the seminars the students are presenting chosen parts of desriptive inorganic chemistry. Presentation technique, opposition and argumentation is trained. Feedback is given both from the students and the teach

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory work is also required. Laboratory work is assigned 2 points and seminars 1 point.
