Aims

The course in macromolecular chemistry should provide the fundamentals in the synthesis of polymers with designed properties. The course supplies knowledge of macromolecular interactions of both synthetic polymers and natural occurring biopolymers.

Content

Polymer synthesis: modern synthetic methods of functional polymers, and their characterisation. Examples include nonoparticles for drug delivery, matrixes for cell growth etc. Macromolecular chemistry: the relationship between structure and property, interactions in solution and bulk. Modern methods for the analysis of interactions/functions occurring on surfaces or in bulk. Naturally occurring biopolymers such as polysaccharides, proteins from the extra cellular matrix, their properties, functions and applications.

Project work: Synthesis and characterisation with modern techniques (DSC, TGA, rheology, NMR, IR, GPC, ESCA, SEM).

Instruction

Lectures, project work.

Assessment

Written examination and passed project report. Passed project work is assigned 3 points.
