Aims
After completing the course, the students should be able to
-
identify and describe the steps included in a complete analytical procedure.

describe common sampling techniques used for inorganic and organic compounds.

calculate the required sample size and number of samples.

describe and use decomposition and sample pretreatment techniques for inorganic and organic compounds.
-
describe and apply analytical methods based on titrimetry.
-
describe and carry out analyses based on liquid and gas chromatographic techniques.
-
describe the use of mass spectrometry in combination with liquid and gas chromatography.
-
describe and carry out analyses based on potentiometric and voltammetric techniques.
-
describe analytical methods based on molecular spectroscopy.
-
describe and carry out analyses based on UV/VIS and fluorescence measurements.
-
describe, plan and carry out analyses based on measurements of atomic absorption.
-
suggest suitable analytical procedures for the determination of inorganic and organic compounds.

calculate and present the results of performed analyses in writing.

describe the meaning of quality assurance in conjunction with analytical methods and the implications of quality assurance in practice.
Content
Analytical methods including the concept of quality assurance. Sampling (techniques and discussions of sample size and number of samples). Decomposition methods for elemental analysis. Sample pretreatment techniques for organic compounds. Analytical techniques based on titrimetry. Chromatographic methods including GC and LC. Electroanalytical techniques (potentiometric and voltammetric techniques). Molecular spectroscopy (MS, UV/VIS, NIR, fluorescence, chemiluminescence). Atomic spectroscopy.
Laboratory work: Laboratory work highlighting chromatographic techniques, UV/VIS, fluorescence, electroanalytical techniques and atomic spectroscopy.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. The course contains exercises and a laboratory course which also should be passed. The laboratory course and exercises are together assigned 1 point. Students who have failed the exam have the right to take a new exam. Two extra exams are given each year, at the end of the term and in August.
