Aims

The aim of the corse is to give students without any background in biology an overview of the basics of evolutionary biology, and to be able to debate societal issues and problems, as for example biological determinism, from a standpoint based on evolutionary biology.

Content

The course gives an overview of basic evolutionary biology. The origin and history of evolutionary biology. Emphasis are put on the basic factors of evolution: varation, selection and inheritance. Biological determinism are discussed. Moreover, the basics of developmental biology and modern systematics are treated. Also the concepts of species and speciation, sex, sex differences and mating systems are handled.

To pass the course requires at least 70% lecture attendance and an approved written assignment.
