Cell biology. Organic chemistry with analytical techniques.
Aims
The course provides fundamental knowledge of the microorganisms, their morphology, physiology and genetics, and practice in problem solving and critical analysis of scientific papers in the subject area. The student should obtain an understanding of microorganisms and their life processes including how these are utilised in industrial applications, and should become proficient in laboratory work with microorganisms.
Content
Microbiological techniques. Metabolism. Properties and prevalence of different microorganisms. Roles of microorganisms in nature and in biogeochemical cycles. Growth and growth regulation, adaptations to extreme environments, global regulation. Mechanisms of virulence and pathogenicity, infectious diseases, antibiotics and resistance. Industrial microbiology. Accessory genetic elements
Laboratory work: Microbiological methods. Identification and characterisation of bacteria. Model systems for controlled production using bacteria.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written exam at the end of the course. Assignments and laboratory work: 2 points.
