Entry requirements
Chemistry, basic course, Physical Chemistry, Mechanics K, and Calculus of one variable or to have equivalent background knowledge.
Aims
By taking this course, the student should be able to:
- Describe different types of fluid flow and friction in flow.
- Calculate the size and energy consumption for a pump in a given problem.
- From a small scale experiment calculate the equipment for an agitation process vessel and choose the right equipment for different applications.
- Chose a mechanical separation methods for a given example.
- From knowledge about heat transfer decide the size of heat exchangers and choose the correct type for a given problem.
- Calculate the size of an evaporator, its energy consumption, and describe heat transfer in different types of evaporators.
- For a given problem be able to calculate the acquired amount of air and energy in a drying process and choose the right type of equipment.
- For the following processes decide the mass transfer and the size of the equipment:
Distillation; Gas absorption; Extraction; Leaching
- Write a technical report.
Content
Introduction to fluid flow. Mechanical unit operations as fluidisation, liquid mixing, sedimentation and filtration. One thermal unit operation, evaporation. The system air/water and drying. Basic mass transfer and its application in distillation, gasabsorption and extraction/leaching.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, laboratory worklessons.
Assessment
Examination is arranged at the end of the course. Laboratory work and other compulsory assignments must also be presented and approved. Students who fail a test normally have the right to a certain number of re-examinations at later dates.
