Aims
To give knowledge about structures and functions of biomolecules, organelles and other cellular structures as well as of whole cells. The student should after the course understand how a cells energy metabolism, growth and communication in different ways are regulated and integrated on the cellular as well as on the molecular level. Knowledge about common methods how to study cells and biomolecules; How to use a microscope. Isolation of cells, organelles and macro-molecules from different kind of tissues. Commonly used chromatographic methods to isolate and characterise biomolecules.
The student should develop his/her writing and oral presentation skills and should become acquainted with the concepts of scientific work.
Content
Biomolecules. Properties of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids. Purification and analysis of biomolecules. Thermodynamics and reaction kinetics. Interactions between biomolecules, and methods how to study interactions. Mechanisms of metabolic regulations. The energy conversions in cells, and the function of chloroplasts and mitochondria. The mechanisms behind transport of organelles, secretion, endocytosis, nuclear and cellular divisions, and movements of cells. Cell communication through electrical and chemical signals. The action of hormones at a cellular level.
Instruction
Lectures, laboratory practicals, seminars, literature presentations, and group exercises. Participation in the group exercises and the practicals are compulsory.
Assessment
Examination throughout the course. Passed practicals and seminars are required for the Passed and the Passed with distinction grades.
