Knowledge and skills corresponding to the course Physical Organic Chemistry NV1, 5 credit points.
Aims
After successful completion of the course, the participant should have:
- a thorough knowledge of experimental and theoretical methods for the elucidation of organic-chemical reaction mechanisms
- detailed knowledge on essential organic reaction mechanisms
- the ability to decisively apply physical organic knowledge within, e.g., synthetic organic and bioorganic chemistry
- the ability to read scientific with gratification articles from the primary literature within the topic
- the ability to employ certain spectroscopic methods for investigations of physical-organic problems.
Content
Thorugh orientation in quantum mechanical models and molecular modelling. Use of spectroscopic (in particular, nuclear magnetic resonance) methods in physical organic chemistry. Mechanism of selected organic reactions, such as pericyclic reactions. Photochemical processes.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, group work and laboratory work. Seminars, laboratory work, and related oral and written presentations are mandatory.
Assessment
Examination is arranged during the course by seminars and mandatory hand-in problems. The laboratory owrk must also be passed.
