Entry requirements

The general rules laid down by the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy apply (see curriculum). The student shall also have passed the courses in Pharmacology (10 points), Pharmaco-epidemiology and Health Economics (7 points) and Pharmacotherapy in self-care (6 points) and shall have participated in the courses in Pharmacotherapy (5 points) and Pharmaceutical Care and Pharmaceutical legislation 6 points).

Aims

The aim of the period of practical training in the BSc Pharm course is to enable the student to become familiar with work in a pharmacy, the various activities carried out at pharmacies and the pharmacies' role in health care. Having completed the course, the student shall:

- be able to dispense prescriptions and provide self-care health advice at pharmacies

- be able to apply his or her theoretical pharmaceutical knowledge in dispensing and informational activities

- be able to carry out internal and external informational activities

- be able to assist customers in a competent manner

- be able to comply with the safety and secrecy requirements that apply in connection with dispensing of prescriptions and advising on self-care

- be able to describe the administrative routines at pharmacies

- be able to discuss the pharmacy's role and function in health care

- be able to describe the Swedish pharmaceutical service in an international perspective

Content

The course includes product supply, dispensing of prescriptions and counselling on self-care, customer reception and ethics, information, administration, the product range and work at a pharmacy.

Instruction

The students receive practical training at pharmacies selected in collaboration with Apoteket AB. The emphasis is placed on learning by participation in the everyday work at pharmacies with an element of problem-based learning. At all training pharmacies, there is a pharmacist who is responsible for that part of the training for which Apoteket AB is responsible. This includes seminars and supervision of the student's everyday work at the pharmacy.

Compulsory parts of the course:

Participation in the practical work at pharmacies and in the tuition at the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Assessment

Students are required to pass the practical training at the pharmacy(PRAK) and other compulsory parts of the course. The examiner is the Study Director at the university. Students who have failed the practical part of the course may repeat it only if special circumstances apply. Application for repetition of the practical training should be made to the Board of the Faculty of Pharmacy, who will reach a decision after hearing the person concerned at the pharmacy.
